Paidhi Girl's Rice Ball

Paidhi Girl's Rice Ball
Originally uploaded by hautdesert

So we've been on a rice kick the past few days, triggered by our trip to San Sai and Paidhi Girl's desire to make sushi.

This afternoon, she made this rice ball.

I've been browsing bento sites, and she was inspired by the pics she saw. She designed and made this all by herself--I wasn't allowed in the kitchen. The eyes and mouth are hot dog, the nose is carrot, and the whiskers are made of nori. Oh, and the ears are bits of leftover chicken.

How cute is that! The sun must be in the constellation of riceballs, or something ... the Young Lady was making onigiri (rice balls) this summer too. But being older, she was decorating hers with artsy patterns of Italian parseley leaves.

Oooh, artsy patterns!

And there should definitely be a constellation called "the rice balls."

I'm thinking we may pack more lunches this year, cause...rice balls! With fillings! We have just made an experimental peanut butter filled rice ball to take to the pool--along with hard boiled eggs, some fried rice balls (put a little soy sauce on, put in a hot dry skillet, turn over to slightly scorch each side...mmm!), and some weiner fish (mine don't curl up quite so cutely, but they still look fantastic and they're insanely easy). I think I could handle starting the rice cooker on a school morning and dumping in some veggies and a weiner fish...

[info]feiran loves rice balls! Do you have a good recipe/instructions? We've just been kind of eating rice in seaweed...

Are you using the right kind of rice? Ours stick together really well. This is the instruction we used--

I find I have to use a hot pad or two on top the plastic wrap, cause, ouch it's hot!

Yes, I always eat sticky rice! :) Thanks--this looks perfect!

:) Sticky rice is an adjustment for me--I usually eat basmati, if I've got a choice, and basmati isn't even remotely sticky. Unless, like, you pour honey on it or something.
