And on top of all this load of crap, women who like SF sometimes get the impression that men don't really want them to like it. After all, if men really wanted women to hang out and talk to them about SF, those men wouldn't write exclusively about male characters and make jokes about how the fun thing to do at SF cons is hire hookers (haw haw haw).

A-freaking-men.

Or make us wear buttons saying that it's not okay to touch our breasts a la Worldcon.

I'll admit, I barely read science fiction anymore, and it's largely because of the sexism and the fact that 95% of female heroines (even those written by female authors) are just men in drag. I'll probably never go to a con again because most of them are filled with skeezy dudes who get way more support than I ever will. At least among literary writers I'm treated as an equal instead of being looked down upon or even worse being placed on a pedestal cause I'm a semi-attractive female.

That's one of the reasons I mostly go to Wiscon, and rarely anywhere else.

The whole guy enthusing about open source boobs...ugh. Yeah.

Though on the upside, I found out about Wiscon from the article. I don't know when I can afford to go up to Wisconsin for that, but my, going to see what I can do.

This just urks me, because the only channel I even consider worth having if I get cable again IS the SciFi Channel. I also like History and Discovery, which, I hear, I'm also not supposed to like.

Wiscon rocks. You should go. This year is sold out, and it's next weekend (I leave Friday morning, yay!) but you should definitely look into going next year.

I actually only get to see SciFi channel stuff after the fact, when it hits DVD, since I don't have cable. But damn it, you'd think a woman running the SciFi channel would have some understanding!

Oh, and totally you're not supposed to like History or Discovery. Didn't you get the memo? It's all shoes and purses. And pretty dresses and romance. Any sort of science or history will make you break out in hives.

Same here. I also have cable for the channels you listed as well as the new "Science Channel" which is like the SciFi Channel minus the fiction.

Did you check out some of the comments left by men after that great article. One word: ick.

This really makes me want to steer clear of science fiction conventions. Since I've never gone, I don't see a reason to start.

Good article, interesting comments. Reinforces for me how lucky I was that my parents happily bought me Action Man (UK GI Joe equivalent) stuff or boxing gloves/bows and arrows if that was what I wanted for christmas/birthday. I had more toy guns than my brother - um, still do. *g* But then, my dad started us reading SF/F as soon as we were old enough. :)

And WisCon ... oh yeah. I'll admit, my only comparisons are WorldCons, World Fantasy (which feels very similar to WisCon) and many years ago UK Trek cons, but WisCon is just awesome. It feels like coming home.

x.X

if anything is going to make me break out into hives, it's the above.

I never had to worry about that in my house growing up. my dad and mom both read scifi voraciously, and, if I were really good, they'd let me borrow the rarer editions from their library. and, yes, of course, my mom had her own scifi collection before she ever met my dad. why live otherwise?

that's when we weren't watching PBS, the History Channel, and AMC :P
